What Is The Global Read Aloud?
The Global Read Aloud is a six-week period where people from around the world connect with one another through blogging, Twitter, Skype, and many other collaborative tools. We all read, write, and discuss the book that everyone is reading internationally. It was so awesome that thousands of readers from around the world were reading the exact same book as us!
How Do I Connect?
You can choose the grade level book you want to read; there are books for every level reader. The website is globalreadaloud.com. You can go here to vote on books, find classes to connect with, and look at the reading schedule...and remember, no spoilers.
Here's What We Did...
The book for this year was Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper. In the book she wrote, there is a little girl who is named Melody that has cerebral palsy and hasn't ever spoken a word. In school, Melody has trouble because when they put her in regular classes with the normal kids, they tease her and leave her out. This book was very inspirational! It helped us realize that even though someone is different, they have the same feelings as you do! We connected through Skype, TodaysMeet, Twitter, and Kidblog. We also had many different guest readers. Also we wrote on our Idea Wall the quotes that spoke to us, which helped us to internalize the text and draw meaning from your personal experiences. We deeply thought about and discussed this amazing book. The Global Read Aloud was so much fun and a great learning experience that we will never forget.
